Today's filmmaker for our Female Filmmakers series is more of a writer and a creator, but she has delivered some seriously sexy work with her very adult content (that's a hint!). Let's talk about the one and only Lucy Kirkwood.
This British was raised in East London, but she went to Edinborough to study theater at university. This foxy brunette began her career as a playwright and she still writes plays primarily. Her plays are award-winning and they are what helped put her on the map. And what a map it would be!
When Lucy was in her 20s, she wrote for several episodes of the British series Skins. Skins was like Euphoria, but in the early 2010s and in England. These naughty teens smoked, drank, did hard drugs, partied, and banged each other's brains out. The fascinating thing about the series is that it boasted a writing staff of actual teenagers. Both the actors and the writers were around the age that they were meant to play which added to the realism of the show and its popularity. Teens across the globe found it relatable - even if the plots, much like Euphoria, were quite insane.
The series launched the careers of several of today's hottest stars like Daniel Kaluuya, Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult, April Pearson, Freya Mavor, and even Hannah Murray from Game of Thrones. See? It was a lot like Euphoria in its star-making abilities and its stars' sexiness.
Lucy specifically wrote two "Effy" episodes which were episodes that focused on the incredibly popular character of Effy on the show. Effy was played by a young and hot Kaya Scodelario and she was a stoic party girl who drove the boys at school wild. Effy is one of the most memorable characters on the show even if Kaya only showed sideboob in one episode.
Lucy Kirkwood continued her streak of writing and she was even hired as a consultant for the wildly popular HBO series Succession. Yes, that Succession! She also wrote for the series The Smoke which starred British favorite Jodie Whittaker.
She most recently created the series Adult Material which had us all very excited for its numerous nude scenes...until we realized that the leading lady was sporting a prosthetic chest. Hayley Squires shows off big jugs, but they are sadly not real. That's okay because Hayley is hot in a lot of scenes!
The show also has, um, adult material. It is about an adult film star named Jolene Dollars who attempts to support her family, her expensive tastes, and her career. She juggles a lot and it shows us what life might be like for a porn diva behind-the-scenes from embarrassing her family to being bored on a porn set in between takes. It is a funny, interesting look at porn and yet another show that shows the realities of porn. There are so many of those now! I'm not complaining - especially when Hayley and her costars are barely wearing anything at all.
For a show about porn, I do wish there was more explicit nudity. Lucy is clearly just getting started. She recently wrote a TV Movie for the BBC called Maryland and she is a playwright in residence at a theater in England. I have high hopes that she is someday going to drop a beautiful film or TV project on us and that it will be filled with skin!
