Lena Dunham is making news again with a brand new movie. Her film is called Sharp Stick and it is about a young woman trying to discover her sexuality. She starts watching a lot of online porn and she becomes obsessed with a pornstar that she loves to watch. Well, it sounds like this movie is primed to have nudity in it. After all, it is about sex and porn! So will Lena Dunham's new movie have nudity?
We do have an answer and that answer is, shockingly, no. In fact, she is proud of the fact that she has made a film about female sexuality without any nudity in it. We know, it's sad, but there is a lot to say about this. Let's dive in to why she is choosing not to include nudity and what that means for Dunham's already very skinteresting career.
Lena was a nudity queen during her first series Girls which put her on the map. Lena's unapologetic nudity and frankness towards sex is exactly what made Girls so popular. Girls was talked about anywhere and everywhere during the series' initial run. Do you remember what it was like back in 2012? You didn't even have to watch Girls to know what was going on in it and who was nude where!
With that in mind, it can be a pretty surprising revelation to think that Lena would write and direct a film about sex and not include nudity. What is the reasoning for that? Apparently, there is a caveat. The film will not have any female nudity. It is highly probable that while the movie will lack female nudity, we will still see some sexy shots of women in their skivvies. After all, lingerie isn't nudity and it is still very sexy. If there are shots of women in their undies, our sticks will get hard.
But why this decision? Lena Dunham does have explanations to offer about her choice not to include female nudity despite her skintastic reputation. "I knew this was going to be a movie about sex that didn't have any female nudity in it," Dunham said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment. "With Girls, there was always a lot of discussion about the nudity, and I wanted to remove that discussion and just have a discussion about the emotional content of the scenes. But that doesn't mean they're not intense ... and it doesn't mean they're not graphic." We will have to see about that.
The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year and it had critics and viewers talking. That leads me to believe that the film may be just as controversial and thought-provoking as any of Lena's work in the past. The movie will star Kristine Froseth as the leading lady and Dunham will also appear in a supporting role.
The movie is in select theaters now and will be available on VOD starting August 16th, so we can soon see what all of the Sharp Stick fuss is all about.
