Review

"There has been an awakening... have you felt it?" While those lines are actually from a Star Wars movie, they could also be applied to the Chuck Heston supernatural vehicle The Awakening (1980)! The grizzled leading man plays archaeologist Matthew Corbeck who, when the film opens, is on a trip to Egypt in search of a long-rumored but never seen tomb belonging to an ancient Egyptian queen. Along for the ride is his eight and a half months pregnant wife Anne (Jill Townsend), who goes into labor on the exact same day that Matthew and his team discover the ancient tomb. And wouldn't you know it, right at the moment Matthew cracks the seal on ancient sarcophagus, his baby daughter Margaret is born! The film jumps ahead in time to a now 20 year old Margaret (Stephanie Zimbalist) who is experiencing strange phenomena just ahead of her 21st birthday! What Margaret doesn't realize, of course, is that the ancient Egyptian queen possessed her spirit all those years ago, and now on the eve of her journey into womanhood, that same queen intends to take full possession of her body and once more conquer the world! Now it's up to Chuck Heston to head her off at the pass, using ancient rituals not performed in millennia, in hopes of not only staving off the apocalypse, but also saving his beloved daughter! Sadly there's no skin to speak of in this twisted tale, but we do get a nice look at the late, great Susannah York—playing one of Heston's assistants—nipping out in a tight white top while excavating! Looks like there's also been an Awakening... in your underwear!
