Today is NO SMOKING DAY, described as “an annual health awareness day which is intended to help smokers who want to quit.” Wisely, the first official No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984, and thus now takes place on the second Wednesday each March—making this year’s celebration on March 9th.
Sleuth has never had a cigarette in his life…but recognizes that for more than a century smoking has symbolized seduction and sensuality to some—especially onscreen: “In the fantasy world of the movies,” notes pop culture site Complex.com, “cigarettes have always been one of the ultimate props.” So let’s give props today—since there’s no ‘National Smoking Day’ to honor the habit—to some current sex symbols who proudly inhale. “On the silver screen,” Complex continues, “a lit cigarette has instantly lent an air of rebellion to the smoker, who suddenly becomes more charming or sultry.” And let’s face it: Who doesn’t love ‘puffies’?
