On the Verge (2021)

The women of the Netflix Original Series On the Verge aren't quite as close to the precipice as the women of Pedro Almodóvar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), but they are all on the verge of something unexpected. French fox Julie Delpy writes, directs, and stars as Justine, a famous chef whose career is on the verge of being in a tailspin. Elisabeth Shue co-stars as single mom Anne, a woman on the verge of fatigue after realizing she's run herself ragged performing the duties of both parents. Then there's Yasmin (Sarah Jones), a wealthy heiress who is perpetually on the verge of mental collapse from illnesses both external and self inflicted. Wrapping it all up is Ell (Alexia Landeau), a woman in search of a job who is taken under the wings of the other three women who seek to help her avoid all of the pitfalls of life that have led them to the brink of that dreaded midlife crisis. To top it all off, the show is set in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that they're all on the verge of a new reality for which none of them are prepared. It's a good thing they've got one another because they're going to need all the help they can get! Sadly, none of the show's big names doff their duds in the first season, but we do get an outrageous topless scene in the show's 8th episode when McKenna Slone plays a woman who loses it when a party that Justine catered is raided by the cops and she rips off her dress and begins smearing Justine's food all over herself! Too bad we weren't invited, seems like one hell of a party!
