Biography

For all you nudie movie history buffs, Canadian actress, producer, screenwriter, director, and author Nell Shipman was a figure of great importance. Born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1892, she along with her husband, Ernest Shipman, made the most successful silent movie in the history of Canadian movie making, Back to God’s Country (1919), which featured one of the earliest nude scenes in the history of filmmaking. Nell played the part of Doris LeBeau, who goes for a dip after taking her clothes off. A Canadian Mounty tries to catch a peek at the action, but he probably doesn’t get to see more than the camera offered us of her jugs. From there, Nell went on to make a few more movies throughout the 20s, and lived out the rest of her long life in California.
