Based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name, this drama from Lady Macbeth director William Oldroyd stars Thomasin McKenzie as the title character, a shy young woman in 1960’s Massachusetts with her alcoholic, widowed father (Shea Whigham). Eileen works as a secretary at a “youth center for boys” aka a juvenile prison, a dour and depressing environment which is brightened by the arrival of a very chic psychologist named Dr. Rebecca St. John (Anne Hathaway). Their developing friendship breaks up the darkness of Eileen's days where only fantasies of sex and violence were once her only escape, and at one point it seems like it could blossom into something more when the blonde babe lays a surprisingly sapphic smooch on her lips, but sadly both ladies remain clothed throughout. Come on, Eileen!
