Bergman Island (2021)

Not to be confused with the documentary of the same name, Bergman Island (2021) is a film from French director Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden, Things to Come) set on Fårö Island, where many of legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's films were made. Perhaps loosely inspired Hansen-Løve's own life and relationship with fellow French director Olivier Assayas, the film stars Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps as Tony and Chris, filmmakers and longtime romantic partners who travel to the island for a screening of Tony's latest film. Tony is an ardent admirer of Bergman's work, finding himself creatively inspired by the trip, while Chris can't help but dwell on Bergman's shortcomings as an artist and a father, finding herself creatively blocked and missing their young daughter June. Hoping that perhaps Tony can help with her block, she begins explaining her script to him which we see acted out in front of us. Amy (Mia Wasikowska) and Joseph (Anders Danielsen Lie) are former lovers who meet on Fårö Island for the first time in years while attending a mutual friend's wedding and the two rekindle their old romance. Unfortunately for them, both are involved in committed relationships back home, so they know that the romance is doomed to end when the trip does. While we're not sure if the idea is any good, we're big fans of the multiple nude scenes from Mia Wasikowska we get in this film within the film, showing off the blonde beauty's terrific T'n'A! Throw in some bonus buns from nudecomer Siri Hjorton Wagner and we'd give this flick the greenlight tomorrow!
