Review

After the historic Bolshevik revolution of 1917, Ewan McGregor’s posh, mustachioed Count Alexander Rostov is dragged in front of a tribunal for sentencing. Due to an unearthed poem he once wrote with rebellious leanings, instead of death, he’s ordered to spend his life trapped within the confines of Moscow’s Metropol Hotel. Though he’s still able to continue to enjoy the standard of living to which he is accustomed thanks to his swanky digs, the many long days spent mingling with all manner of guests from the outside world give him the opportunity to reflect on his parasitic past and eventually be humbled and even grow from these new experiences as an (albeit well taken care of) captive prisoner. One of his encounters is with Ewan’s real-life spouse Mary Elizabeth Winstead, playing the glamorous and sexually aggressive actress Anna Urbanova. In the second episode, she makes quite an entrance in a daringly cut dress, then later jumps his bones in her hotel room. It’s enough to lead to some rather ungentlemanly behavior on yourself!
