Lady Godiva was a freedom rider; she didn't care if the whole world looked. And then there's Maude!

The fascination with nude celebrities hit new and unusual heights Wednesday night when a painting of Bea Arthur baring her golden girls sold for $1.9 million at a Christie's auction.

The painting was completed in 1991 by artist John Currin, and despite her penchant for bawdy talk, Bea did not pose for the painting or acknowledge its presence before she passed away in 2009. And as much as fans may have delighted in seeing their favorite Golden Girl in the buff, Bea Arthur never got nude on camera.

Spank you for being a friend, Bea!
