For today's far-out Hippie Hotties blog, let's take a look at a groovy film that was long thought to be forgotten. We are talking about Gold: Before Woodstock. Beyond Reality, a comedy about a hippie revolution in a small rural town.
The plot follows a cop named Captain Harold Jinks who is an uptight square. He does not like the local hippies in his rural town gallivanting about naked. He's tired of it! He then puts a law in place that bans public nudity. Oh no! That's the worst thing we can think of.
Now local hippie rebel Hawk has to save the people from this anti-Hippiedom. Del Close plays Hawk and we will get to him in a second. First, let's talk about the sexy women in this movie. Caroline Parr plays Miss Gold Nugget and she shows her golden nuggets off as she dances topless.
She also has a wild sex montage shot in psychedelic colors that show Caroline's body in a variety of positions. The sex looks VERY realistic to me here although it is likely not real sex. That said, you can determine how realistic it looks for yourself by watching the scene below. Parr's pair make this scene well worth watching.
Gold was shot in 1968 in northern California, but it wasn't actually seen until 1972 when it was finally released in movie houses in London, England. No one in America even saw the film until 1996. This film was thought to be lost for years as a result! It was found and restored and released in America, finally.
Who is this bespectacled leading man anyway? Del Close stars in the film who later became famous as "the father" of long-form improv. Have you ever heard of Improv Olympic or UCB? They owe everything they know to their founder Del Close who was a hippie that ran with Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters.
He wound up living in Chicago, working with Second City, and eventually using his LCD-inspired ideas to create his own fluid form of improv comedy that, truthfully, wound up influencing modern American comedy as we know it. All of those hippie antics really informed the guy who created it all. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch were all personally taught how to be hilarious by this man. See? Hippie movies can be educational as well as hot!
Is this film a hidden gem? Honestly, no. It's not great, but the nudity is good. You don't have to subject yourself to the entire film. Instead, just watch the nude scenes right here on Mr. Skin! How about this scene in which Caroline Parr bangs a guy outside in multi-colored, groovy, psychedelic film effects. The music can be distracting, but so are her big breasts:
