Over the weekend The Atlantic posted an article praising Sydney Sweeney's rise in Hollywood and highlighting the young star's openly strategic approach to her career. While we at Skin Central have been praising Sydney for years - never forget that I was an early adapter who knew she'd be a star after seeing her massive cleavage in Everything Sucks! - it was surprising to read how savvy she is.

Sydney has been in a wide range of films and TV shows. It's impressive and rare when you consider this ingenue has been given that kind of chance. She has done teen comedies, romantic comedies, prestige television, gritty TV dramas, erotic thrillers, superhero movies, and gory horror. What can't she do? And why is she doing it all?
Fascinatingly, Sydney has been open about this. Firstly, she is NOT a nepo baby. That is pretty rare these days, especially when you look at who her co-stars tend to be. From Maude Apatow to Dakota Johnson, Sydney has shared screens with Nepo babies. She told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2022 that she can't afford to not work constantly because “they don’t pay actors like they used to. If I wanted to take a six-month break, I don’t have income to cover that. I don’t have someone supporting me, I don’t have anyone I can turn to to pay my bills or call for help.”
She has added to other outlets like The Sun that she has to give so much of her paychecks to her agents, managers, and lawyers. She wants to give money to her family, too. That means she can't stop working. She has added that she feels a "responsibility" to help her family. All of this is so admirable - and refreshing. Nepo babies definitely don't feel that way!
So Sydney is working her ass off for financial purposes, but she also takes roles strategically. In The Atlantic article, it was reported that she said she did Madame Web as a "building block". That film has been critically panned, but she doesn't mind it at all. She said that she didn't do it because she believed it would be a good movie. She did it to work with Sony and get more films made that she wanted to get produced.
"Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but [for] strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella." That's cool for two reasons: it's neat to see how smart she is and that means that she wanted to do Anyone But You (which is being heralded as reviving the romantic comedy genre) and we get to see her do Barbarella soon.
In Immaculate, she displays her scream queen side which is also something that we haven't seen from her yet. That also opens up those avenues for her! So what's next for the savvy starlet? She is going to star alongside other sexpots Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas in a Ron Howard film called Eden. So that will be fun!
