Staff Picks: Trans Movies

OurStaff Pickscolumn takes you back to a time when video stores reigned supreme and the "Staff Picks" section was the place to find out what films were worthy of one's time. Of course, our version ofStaff Pickshas a decidedly skintillating angle, as we suss out which films from a particular subgenre are the best to find great nudity. This week, we cover a classic: trans movies.

Increased representation on screen of trans people and trans stories means that we can now have an entire staff picks that features movies with trans themes and characters that also features nudity. Check out these sexy flicks for Pride Month that show trans identities while also giving us some classic TA!

Tangerine

This 2015 film is notable for a few reasons: it was shot on an iPhone. It was Sean Baker's first film (the director of The Florida Project). It starred a trans woman as a sex worker recently released from jail who spends Christmas trying to track downher boyfriend who, as it turns out, has been sleeping with another woman behind her back. Oh, did we mention it is also a Christmas movie? Merry Titsmas!

Cis pornstar Ana Foxx shows her bush to a client, but Kitana Kiki Rodriguez sticks to her bra as she and her other trans sisters go on a wild adventure through Hollywood. This is Kitana's only film and she is stunning in it! I really wish she would return to the spotlight and give it another sexy go.

All About My Mother

If you want gay-themed Spanish movies, then you need to turn to director Pedro Almodovar. All of Pedro's movies are colorful - literally, they are visually colorful - and filled with a variety of complex characters, many of whom happen to be gay or trans. In this 1999 film, Almodovar brings together a wide array of characters from a pregnant nun to a pair of lesbians to trans sex workers. Everyone is in this wacky film that, like all Almodovar films, unfolds in wild ways.

The Danish Girl

In 2015, Eddie Redmayne was celebrated for playing a transgender woman in this portrayal of trans artist Lili Elbe. Based on a true story, we are transported back in time to 1920s Copenhagen in which Lili decided to transition. Alicia Vikander plays Gerda Wegener who was Lili's partner. Together, they help Lili's transition as she becomes her true self and she becomes one of the first people in the world to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

While Alicia's character helpsher partner become comfortable in her own skin, Alicia Vikander shows us how comfortable she is in hers with amazing nude scenes that show off all 3 B's!

Boys Don't Cry

Boys Don't Cry was the award-winning, tear-jerking, shocking film that told the true story of Brandon Teena. Brandon Teena as a trans man who passed as a cis man in a small Nebraska town. Please note that the movie doesn't use language like trans or cis, nor do most retellings of Brandon's story because he also didn't use those terms when he was alive. He probably would today, but that's all speculation. Regardless, Brandon was AFAB and living very passably as a man.

Staff Picks: Trans Movies

When it was the truth came out, Brandon's male friends came after him and violently attacked him. It's a horrific story that ends tragically. In the film, Hilary Swank plays Brandon beautifully and his girlfriend is played by Chloe Sevigny. They have a tender sex scene outdoors which shows Chloe's bare chest in the grass as Hilary fondles her and goes down on her. Boys Don't Cry...but they get horny!

The Skin I Live In

This is an untraditional trans story as it is a bit of a body horror film. This incredibly nuanced and chilling story from Pedro Almodovar will not immediately read as a "trans movie" until you get to the very end and then it very much is a trans story. I do not want to give away much of the film, but I can tell you that it has a series of twists and turns.

To briefly sum up the plot, we meet a world-renowned surgeon who appears to have a beautiful patient in a skintight bodysuit captive in his home. As the movie goes on, the story is pieced together. Who is she? Why is she there? And what made the doctor keep her there? The movie becomes clearer - and more complicated - as it goes on and we learn that Elena Anaya's character is a man who has been forced to live in the wrong body. Unfortunately for him, it is a very beautiful body.
