A lifelong surfer, Sonya found all her dreams coming true when she was cast as Lanikai Kealoha in the TV series Beyond the Break where she played a girl vying to become a professional surfer. The surf theme continued when she was then cast the bitchy Marlina Birch, a semi-pro surfer, in Soul Surfer (2011).
