LINDA BLAIR: Still Turning Heads!

Fri, Dec 4, 2015 by Sleuth

“We threw out a net for about 2,000 girls,” recalls director William Friedkin about casting the consensus ‘scariest movie in history,’ 1973’s The Exorcist. “And we couldn’t find anybody who could even handle the subject matter.” Ready to give up, Friedkin began auditioning actresses in their late teens, when a 13-year-old child model who’d already appeared in 75 commercials suddenly showed up with her mother to the director’s office at {would you believe} 666 Fifth Avenue!

Asked if she knew what the possessed girl doesin the film, angelic applicant Linda Denise Blair from ritzy Westport, CT {home of that year’s Ivory Snow porn star Marilyn Chambers} replied: “Shemasturbateswith a crucifix.” When the director wondered: “Do you know whatthatmeans?” she said: “Yes, it’s like jerking off, isn’t it?” “Do youdothat?” flummoxed Friedkin gulped. “Sure,” laughed Linda. “Don’tyou?” She got the part.

The first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture (one of its 10 Oscar nods), The Exorcist’s most memorable scene was surely the super-scary spewing of lime slimewhich lives on in popular culture from cartoons {Family Guy} to crochet.

Linda insisted that the substance splattered on the poor priest was Campbell’s Split Pea soup, reporters regurgitated her remark, and that became conventional wisdomuntil now! Sleuth tracked down Blair’s body double who actually performed the scene, Eileen Dietz (below left)twice Linda’s age at the time.

Eileen was fitted with a plastic tube {a demonic device} to spare little Linda the trauma, and generously gifted us with an inscribed image of the vile bile.

Linda likely lost out on becoming the youngest Oscar winner ever {to Tatum O’Neal} due to Dietz and gravelly voice double Mercedes McCambridge revealing she hadn’t done the most lurid lines and actsso they haven’t spoken since.

The demon and her double are also at odds about the brand of soup usedwith Eileen emphatic that it was Andersen’s Split Pea (not Campbell’s)yet each provided a signed can of their claimed confection to Lot 14.

“I wanted to have a chest,” Linda lamented after filming...and the condemned Catholic had her prayers answered when she went from prosthesis to protruding!

“I want people to see that I am all grown upand have shed the baby fat,” the former child star explained her decision to shedeverythingon the 10thanniversary ofThe Exorcistin 1983. Get agrip, girl!

Just 5-foot-2 and 115 pounds at the time, the 34C-24-34 Blair boasted: “Someone told me recently that I have very heavy breasts. ‘No wonder you weigh so much,’ he told me, ‘your tits must weigh 10 pounds each!’” And even more when jubilantly soaked to the skin

Perhaps ‘The Devil Made Her Do It,’ though Linda proudly proclaimed: “I don’t want to live off that film forever. I will have a Second Coming.” Yet the girl who came from a crucifix, soon to be 57, says today: “My life is possessed with The Exorcist {in the soup with Kathie Lee Regis, below}. It has been a very interesting cross to bear.” And bare (in
Lot 251).
