Dakota Johnson is having a moment at the moment. That is because the star of Madame Web is on a press tour which is getting a lot of press for her attitude. She seems to be very "over it" when promoting the film - roasting herself, the movie, her co-stars, and the interview experience itself.
The brunette babe is making all of us laugh and reminding some of us that she's never taken herself that seriously. Remember 50 Shades of Grey? You have to have a great sense of humor to do stuff like this:
Where did the 34-year-old actress get this attitude from? I suspect that growing up with famous parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith makes one tire of the press experience. The glitz and glamour may be old hat to her. Maybe she yearns to be like the rest of us: keeping it real and cracking jokes.
In that way, she's the nepo baby everyone seems okay with. She appears very aware of her privilege and is willing to swipe at everything that someone who wasn't raised famous wouldn't be able to get away with.
I like that she also takes after her mother Melanie who had a similar cool attitude - and who also went nude quite a bit. Melanie also had a cool punk attitude that she took with her to hot 80s movies like the romantic comedy Something Wild and the Brian De Palma erotic thriller Body Double.
In Body Double, she was bleach blond with a short haircut as she danced sensually nude. De Palma's erotic thriller still holds up. A man is holed up in his apartment as he begins spying on a blond neighbor. He witnesses her murder, then he sees a new tenant in that apartment: a blond woman who looks exactly like her. The 1984 film is loosely inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and Vertigo which is very interesting considering who Melanie's mother is.
Of course, Melanie had a cool attitude too...and was also a nepo baby. Her mother was Tippi Hedren whom Hitchcock famously terrorized during the filming of her movies The Birds and Marnie. She struggled to get back on top after working with him (where she rejected his advances for an affair). Sir Sean Connery himself said that Tippi was underrated while everyone else in Hollywood was overrated.
So Dakota comes from a long line of leading ladies who stick up for themselves - and leading ladies who take it off for the camera and don't care what anyone thinks about them. Dakota Johnson is simply acting as her mother and grandmother did in Hollywood: cool, naked, and willing to say whatever they want regardless of the consequences.
While Tippi may have had some consequences for standing up for herself to Hitchcock, her famous daughters were grand-daughtered by directors taking out their frustration on them. That is all to say, I think Dakota Johnson is doing just fine. I love her press tour. More! And more nudity from her and her mom!
