Katie Morgan was home schooled by strict conservative Christian parents and got into porn to pay her legal bills when she was busted trying to transport 100 pounds of marijuana into the U.S. After spending 18 months in jail, Katie made more than 200 films, including Young Dumb and Full of Cum 9 (2002), Sophia's All Girl Violation (2006), No Boys No Toys (2006), and Dude Where's My Dildo (2002).
In 2005 she was the subject of the HBO documentary film Katie Morgan: A Porn Star Revealed, and also made a series of specials for the cable network where she gave sex advice in the nude. In 2008 she appeared on Entourage and in the Kevin Smith comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
She recently took time out to talk to C.G. Hilliard about her latest projects.
You just won AVN’s crossover of the year award. What does crossover mean to you? Do you stop doing porn completely or is it just the best of both worlds?
I guess it’s more just that having any amount of success in the mainstream counts as crossing when you’ve started on the porn side of things. That’s supposed to be a barrier in and of itself.
I know you got into porn to pay your legal bills after you were arrested for transporting marijuana. How long did it take to do that?
I owed quite a large debt to society on account of all the weed, so it was probably about a year that I was paying that off.
And did you think about stopping after you paid off your bills?
About stopping porn? Oh, no! I loved it! It was like the best job I ever found! It was awesome. It was almost like lightning striking, I couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t thought of it sooner.
What did you think when HBO approached you to do a series of specials on your sex tips?
Oh, I was thrilled! I’d been with them since we did Pornotopia back in 2003, so it’s been a minute. We used to do one every few months.Whose idea was it for you to be nude?
It was theirs, but I’m totally down with the naked.
What was the most important piece of sex advice you gave?
I guess the most important was that everybody’s basically happy. Even though we’re all stressed about ourselves, your significant other is probably pretty much just happy with you.
What’s your favorite of all the hardcore films you’ve done and why?
Definitely God’s Will because I got to play God, which was kind of awesome and I got to do the Devil, which was even awesome-er.
What was the best part about working on Zack and Miri?
I guess just being able to see the grandeur of it all. You know, using cameras that cost more than $600 at Best Buy. Was the porno they were making in the movie anything like any porno you’ve ever been in?
Well, I’ve certainly done my share of tacky theme movies. I did the donut shop one and the coffee shop one They’re all very similar, when you theme them out that way.
Did you offer any suggestions?
I did, but mostly about angles of people and angles of camera so that it looked like we were actually doing stuff and were the least visible.
What was it like meeting Traci Lords?
It was totally awesome. She’s definitely a bit of a notorious legend in my industry. It was kind of surreal, really, because she was well, well before my time.
What was the first nude scene you remember seeing on TV or the movies?
Definitely Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Really? That’s the best one of all time for us!
It is definitely a classic. I guess I started at the top there.
What’s your favorite of all time?
I would say Troy. Uh, yeah. Because Brad Pitt is all buff and sweaty and stuff.
You have another mainstream movie coming out this year called Shoot the Hero with Jason Mewes, the guy you had sex with in Zack and Miri. What can you tell us about that?
We just wrapped and I’m actually still out here in Palm Springs. In the movie, I play Baby Doll, a tough gangster’s girlfriend.
