Flag Day is celebrated in the United States every year on June 14th, in commemoration of the adoption of the American flag on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress, less than a year after the Declaration of Independence.

Here is the wording of the resolution:

Those original “thirteen stars” had grown to 48 by the time screen goddess Ava Gardner was waving the flag for a Forties pinup pose—a number unchanged from 1912, when Arizona joined the union…and this foxy ‘Phoenix’ rose nude from the ashes.

The number of stars grew to its present 50 when Hawaii was granted statehood on August 21, 1959—less than two years before Barack Obama was born in Honolulu {trumping the claims of a certain presidential aspirant}. The unofficial motto of the islands seems to be “hang loose”…and this Hawaiian eyeful does her part(s).

“While the Fourth of July has become an all-around celebration of U.S. life,” notes one observer, “Flag Day has kept more of a local character. And like many family festivals, it feels right to be celebrating it with your own.” Thus, the tempting trio known as the Dahm Triplets—identical sisters Nicole, Erica and Jaclyn Dahm, born a year after the Bicentennial, paint the town—and their torsos—in honor of the occasion.

Erica has been married to the son of Dr. Phil since 2006, when the heir with hair declared: “She’s the one I want to spend the rest of my life with!” The others ain’t two shabby either…

Speaking of Phil, it was in Philly that Flag Day was first established: “In 1893, the Society of Dames of Philadelphia succeeded in getting a resolution passed to have the flag displayed on all of the city’s public buildings,” explains the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. However, Elizabeth Duane Gillespie, a direct descendent of Benjamin Franklin and president of the Dames, was told to go fly a kite when she tried to get Philadelphia to call June 14th Flag Day. As the Veterans Affairs official statement notes, “Resolutions by women were not granted much notice” back then. Nowadays, we salute their resolve!

It was not until 44 years later that Pennsylvania “became the first state to establish the June 14th date as a legal holiday,” notes the V.A. “Flag Day is a nationwide observance today, but Pennsylvania remains the only state that recognizes it as a legal holiday.” So while it gets a lot of “love” from the people, the upshot is you to still have to go to work!

It’s not safe for work, however, to celebrate with Sleuth’s Top Ten temptresses who “raise the flag” today. Many we haven'tuncovered here before.

These stars show their stripes so, as the song says, “Keep Your Eye on the Gland Old Flag!”

Please note that we’ve made it a point not have any shots showing the flag touching the ground, a sign of disrespect. Butt all respect must go to Grey’s gluteus—so beauteous it can surely serve as an END in itself.

Now there’s a patriotic flag view that we can all rally round! And that goes double for us!
