The legendary fiction about two lovers-turned-rivals who play a wicked game that ruins multiple lives finally gets the series treatment from STARZ. Only this time it begins with the couple, played by Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton, when they are young, in love, and looking for a way to escape their destitute lives together. This iteration proves to be just as scandalous as the original source material, starting right off the bat with a montage of sexiness featuring Lesley Manville’s mams as she rides her unseen lover. Her handsome young man turns out to be Nicholas’s Valmont, who’s keeping the letters the highborn lady has written to him as a blackmail tool. Alice’s Camille is not a fan of the idea, but she’s also in a precarious position - heavily indebted to a brothel owner and trying to work off what she owes. The cathouse setting means a fabulous amount of sensuous skin on display, including a quick glimpse of Alice’s rack! We’re in danger of blowing our load after just the first episode!
