'To Leslie' Plot
Have you heard about the controversy over Andrea Riseborough's Oscar nomination? Well strap on, because it's a doozy. To Leslie is a micro-budget widely-acclaimed indie drama starring Andrea Riseborough as a self-destructive addict barreling through life on a never-ending quest for drugs and money. Her character, the titular Leslie, has blown through her nearly $200K lottery winning, and stays briefly with her son at his apartment, and later at a roach motel, where she receives a helping hand from the motel's kind manager, played by Marc Maron. Will Leslie get her life together before her vices and poor decision-making consume her? Only the few people who have seen the movie know the answer!
Why Is 'To Leslie' Controversial?
So why is this seemingly straightforward indie so controversial this awards season? Because the producers of To Leslie weren't afraid to directly email Oscar voters as well as get in touch with them through social media for a grassroots awards-season push. With the film's micro-budget, this approach certainly makes sense (bigger-budgeted films are able to reach voters through pricy ad campaigns). A-listers got behind the movie, and Riseborough's performance, in a huge way, even hosting screening parties for To Leslie themselves. Insiders raved about Riseborough and took her on, for lack of a better word, as a cause this awards season. Kate WIlsnet even said at her To Leslie viewing party: “I think this is the greatest female performance onscreen I have ever seen in my life.”
While the Academy has not mentioned Riseborough or To Leslie by name, they did announce that they are conducting a review of all of this year's nominees. "We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication."
