'Allo 'Allo!

Review

Quite honestly one of the most consistently funny series to ever come out of the UK, ‘Allo ‘Allo was a comedy based on a portly French cafe owner, Rene (Gordon Kaye) during the second world war. Being as he works for the French underground, he’s constantly finding himself in compromising situations (especially since women find him irresistible). But because his café is constantly overrun with German soldiers looking for wine, women, and song, his need to keep his café running puts him in even more compromising positions. And then there’s his wife (Carmen Silvera), a total battleaxe of the first order. Thankfully, the incompetence of the Germans invariably saves Rene’s neck at the zero hour, while the locals’ thick-headed attempts at espionage puts it right back on the chopping block again. Full of memorable characters (such as the English spy pretending to be a policeman and getting his French very wrong), continual catchphrases (“Lizzen very carefully. I shall zay zis only once!”), and situations that will live on in memory for years (such as the eternal search for the ‘painting of the madonna with the big boobies’), this is one sitcom that will simply never get old. Men-folk will no doubt agree that the tastiest morsel on the show is waitress Yvette, played by Vicki Michelle. Though you never saw more than underwear shots on the show, for a look at Vicki’s 70’s bush, check out 1971’s Virgin Witch. Tasty!
