For his 22nd feature directorial effort, Bronx born provocateur Abel Ferrara gets meta with the flick Zeros and Ones (2021). The film stars Ethan Hawke, who also appears as himself in two bizarre bookend segments surrounding the film, as an American military counter terrorism expert and soldier named J.J. who is in Rome to gather intel about a possible plot to blow up the Vatican. However, J.J. has other things on his mind while in Rome, namely he wants to locate his estranged brother, an anarchist and political prisoner he thinks may have been killed by the Italian authorities who arrested him. Of course, J.J.'s two missions soon become one as he begins to suspect that his brother is one of the masterminds of the alleged plot to blow up the Vatican, and finding him alive may help to prevent the attack from happening in the first place or, at the very least, help to mitigate any potential fallout from the attack, if it goes ahead as planned. J.J. is a true man alone in both of his quests as neither the Italian authorities nor time are on his side, but if he plays his cards right, he may be able to stop a tragedy. The real tragedy is that this is an Abel Ferrara film with absolutely no nudity in it. There is one sexy scene where Cristina Chiriac appears as a Russian agent and shows off her sexy body in a singlet! When it comes to nudity, unfortunately, Zeros and Ones falls into the former category!
