A close-knit family rings in the holidays in the German Democratic Republic in Wie die Alten sungen... (1986), a nostalgic comedy full of good cheer. Erwin Geschonneck stars as the graying patriarch of a sprawling family that can’t quite get its act together in time for Christmas. As children and grandchildren, aunts and uncles, scurry around trying to round up the troops, Grandpa Lörke begins to understand the divisions separating the younger and older generations. For one thing, the grandkids are a lot more liberated when it comes to earthly pleasures--Lörke’s visibly amazed when his comely granddaughter (Andrea Lüdke) frolics around the bathtub without a stitch of clothing.
