Zack Snyder's 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen is among the more slavishly faithful comic book movies ever made, which makes the prospect of another adaptation of the source material all the more puzzling. Thankfully the creators of the new HBO series of the same name have gone a different route, imagining a modern settingwhich is influenced by the events of the original 12-issue limited series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

While this new trailer from last weekend's Comic Con is still light on details and particulars, it's obvious that the journal Rorschach mailed to the radical right-wing publication The New Frontiersman has inspired a new generation of vigilantes to take up his cause. This, of course, puts them into conflict with both evil-doers and the police, setting the stage for another showdown between several groups all thinking that they're doing the right thing.

Regina King, Jean Smart, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, and Frances Fisher are among the cast members for this new series, which looks like it's going to continue HBO's trend of taking dark subject matter and making it palatable to a large audience. Fingers crossed they make some time to get some skin in the game as well!

Watchmen is set to debut on HBO in October!
