Documentarian Sabine Derflinger tries her hand at fiction filmmaking with the gritty and perceptive German feature Vollgas (2002). Alternately titled Step on It, Derflinger’s film charts the highs and lows of life as a seasonal employee--specifically those unfortunate enough to be waiting tables at an isolated resort in the Austrian mountains. Henriette Heinze leads a talented ensemble cast as Evi, a harried single mother who endures the demands of pampered guests by consuming an unending supply of coffee, cigarettes, and narcotics. At least it’s enough to loosen her up--when she’s not on the clock, Evi is fond of primping and pursuing random male guests who are lucky enough to fall into her clutches. Watching Heinze’s heinie is a full-time job, but you should consider pulling extra shifts scoping Sibylle Gogg as she climbs out of a steaming hot tub.
