Harried frequent fliers and cramped commuter shuttlers of today may have a hard time believing that there existed an era in the history of American aviation when stewardess was considered a glamour occupation. In the valuations of our crass modernity, the waitresses of the sky are accorded the esteem of shoe clerks or school nurses. At the time depicted in View from the Top (2003), droves of small-town girls who had been blessed with smarts, cutes, and the desire to broaden their horizons competed for positions that would take them to exotic locales and introduce them to worldly and handsome gentlemen. The naïve but quickly learning heroines of View blow a breath of innocent ambition into a world that has grown all too cynical and grasping.
