Review

An Iranian dissident passes herself off as a recently deceased Arab activist in the critically acclaimed social drama Unveiled (2005). German actress-singer Jasmin Tabatabai stars as Fariba, an enterprising young woman who breaks free of her restrictive country before pulling out all stops to guarantee that she won’t have to return. By assuming the identity of a refugee who has recently committed suicide, Fariba is able to sneak into the German countryside and live under the radar as a sauerkraut-factory employee. When the expatriate meets a sexy female laborer (Anneke Kim Sarnau) on the line, sparks quickly fly between the two women. Angelina Maccarone’s directorial debut has complex things to say about cultural and sexual politics, yet the electricity between Sarnau and Tabatabai is scintillatingly clear.
