A paleontologist has an uncharacteristic response to the news that he’s contracted a fatal brain disease in the quirky Canadian comedy Two Thousand and None (2000). John Turturro stars as Benjamin Kasparian, a nebbish scientist who’s world is turned upside down by the revelation that he’s likely to die in less than a month. Instead of going quietly into the night, Kasparian resolves to treat this situation with humor and good cheer, a response that his ex-wife and friends have a lot of difficulty handling. Told with an infectious and most unusual blend of horror and hilarity, Arto Paragamian’s feature gets lots of mileage out of bizarre dream sequences, including one in which Turturro pushes a nude Pascale Devigne on a rope. I suppose it’s best to let the dying guy have his fun, but it might be nice if he asked her to get off her swing and indulge in a quick shag.
