A depressed, unemployed actor gets a new lease on life from a pair of magical alley sweepers in the enchanting European romantic drama Twice Upon a Yesterday (1998). María Ripoll’s directorial debut––a French-German-Spanish co-production—stars Douglas Henshall as Victor, a thespian who plans to commit suicide after his girlfriend leaves him and his career heads south. Before he can pull the trigger, however, a pair of mysterious garbage men grants him a second chance by sending him back in time to try his hand with a new woman––the vivacious Penélope Cruz. Though Cruz is frustratingly modest throughout, costar Heather Weeks turns up the heat by embracing her lover in a bubble bath.
