Playing a stripper on screen isn't a new phenomenon, it dates all the way back to the Pre-Code Days in Hollywood. While it has exploded in popularity over the last twenty years, it wasn't until the 90s that it started to become more commonplace on film. Major blockbusters like Independence Day featured major characters playing strippers, and more films began to be set at strip clubs than ever before.
The 90s were like the stripper renaissance, gaining mainstream acceptance while still being relatively marginalized. Strippers fared better in films that weren't set at the strip club, however, as both Showgirls and Striptease were high profile flops. Time has been much kinder to both of those films, which are certainly more respected and beloved now than they were in their own day.
