Most kids, particularly of the poetic type, go through a phase of being alienated from their parents and neighbors, but few awkward-age weirdoes have a coming-of-age as tough as the adolescent hero of They Are Among Us (2004). This troubled and insecure lad lives in a small town where everyone, even his mom and his dad, is monitoring his every move. They stare at him as he engages in his mundane existence, eying him with barely concealed loathing, as if he among all the townsfolk is some kind of space-alien infiltrator arrived to invade the bodies of regular folk and slay them and eat them at his leisure. For a while there, the boy can’t be sure if he’s an intergalactic monster, or if everyone else is a planet-hopping freak. Once that all clears up, life becomes really crazy.
