There are times when skinema fans need to make a truce between serious historical content and serious femme flesh. Consider, fittingly enough, The Truce (1997) as an underseen wonder in which John Turturro plays a Holocaust survivor trying to get back home to Italy after the fall of the Nazis. It’s a touching and grueling drama that also has moments of life and hope--particularly in the form of Agnieszka Wagner as a kindly prostitute whose striking nudity allows Turturro to rediscover some earthly delights.
