The Sugarland Express (1974) is the first theatrically released film directed by Steven Spielberg, an adventure/road drama about two crooks whose only child is taken by the state of Texas. After busting Clovis (William Atherton) out of jail, he and Lou-Jean (Goldie Hawn) steal their son from his new foster home. But things get messy along the way and they end up taking a highway patrolman hostage. So begins a hot cross-country pursuit as the fugitives fight to keep their family in tact with even their captor coming to understand their plight. The story is based on true events that took place in Texas in 1969 and depicts how these renegade rents became something of folk heroes to sympathetic townsfolk they met en route. It's especially hard to lay down the law on Goldie in her glory, peeling off her shirt with her back to the camera, giving us a glimpse at her right side boob and panties-clad booty. Thankfully that sugar landed some more bum baring roles since this early Spielberg spectacle.
