Review

A lovely confection of a fake within a fallacy, wrapped in a pastry of richly humored irony, The Son of Gascogne (1995) provides the film gourmand with a celluloid repast that is every bit as nourishing as it is sweet. The hero of director Pascal Aubier’s anti-existential romp is both French and fictional, a callow tour guide who is passing himself off as the bastard son of a famous dead Parisian film director. The director is a made-up character, but the nouvelle vague luminaries such as actress Stephene Audran and auteur Claude Chabrol who share their memories of working with Gascogne are as real, touching, and funny as only the best artifice can be.
