The perils of wartime can strike from any direction and at any time. While many of the small-town good folk of World War II-era Cut Off, Louisiana, are defenders of The Home Front (2002), scanning the sandy shoreline for incursions by Nazi U-boats, a few nasty-minded neighbors plot and connive. Alternately titled The Scoundrel's Wife and written and directed by Cajun filmmaker Glen Pitre, this morality tale of false jingoism and mob mentality shows that mixing suspicion with aspersion can turn any of us into homegrown Nazis. The Home Front is a salient reminder that not even Paradise was defensible from its home-grown serpent.
