The boys who go by the namesMo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, have become Irish stars in the past few years. They rose to fame after Móglaí Bap wrote a song about his first arrest. Móglaí Bap and his friend went to a pro-Irish language march. He spray-painted the word "Cearta" on a bus stop which means "rights". He was arrested with his friend, but he escaped. His friend on the other hand was not so lucky. His pal spent the night at the police station and refused to speak English the entire time, speaking only in Irish. He was released the next day and told Móglaí Bap what happened to him, inspiring him to write Kneecap's first single "C.E.A.R.T.A."
Their song was banned on the radio in 2017 for its profanity and drug references, but fans petitioned radio stations. They put the song back on the air and the rest is history. The boys are VERY pro-Irish and are inspiring youth in and around West Belfast. They are controversial for their open drug references. Even their name is a reference to the punishment drug dealers would get. Móglaí Bap has said they talk about "things that would get us kneecapped."
