Review

Based on the early 20th century existential novel of the same name by G.K. Chesterton, The Man Who Was Thursday (2016) is the debut feature film from acclaimed Hungarian writer and director Balazs Juszt. Thursday (François Arnaud) is a priest whose parish is rocked by tragedy following the discovery of his alcoholism and the exposing of his affair with a local married woman named Saturday (Ana Ularu). He is summoned to the Vatican for rehabilitation, expecting that he'll be put into a rehab facility and made to do penance of some sort. Instead, his bosses in the Catholic church have a much more dangerous rehabilitation regimen for him to follow. They want him to infiltrate a local revolutionary group who have been secretly plotting to murder the pope, in hopes that he can either destroy this revolution from within or give the church the information they need to squash the rebellion themselves. However, he is soon caught up in the ideals of the group and before long, finds himself a willing conspirator against the powers that be within the church, succumbing to the very ideals he was sent to destroy. Although the film isn't a faithful adaptation of Chesterton's novel—which itself has been adapted countless times, including by Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre—the film uses the basic framework of the story to examine the power of propaganda used both by the church and against it. More importantly, for our purposes anyway, the flick does feature a brief topless sex scene from the gorgeous Ana Ularu, who is one Hungarian babe sure to leave you Hungary for more!
