Deception is another name for the game that is pitching, packaging, and producing a Hollywood feature film. Producers, directors, actors, and writers are all by definition liars--each of these fabricators plies an interlocking web of illusion as the raw material of the vision they hope to create. An eager but unfulfilled filmmaker is doubly duped in The Last Shot (2004). The budding screen mogul naïvely believes that the only falsities he must weed through are misrepresentations from the greedy bastards who have been kind enough to finance his artful storytelling. The high-minded auteur fails to discern that his investors are in fact FBI agents orchestrating a Mob sting. They have no intention of bringing his script to the screen. Cecil B. DeShill’s only hope is that Hollywood’s off-kilter reality will lure the undercover lawmen to chase the illusion of living big-screen large.
