Produced by the Shaw Brothers, the Hong Kong drama The Girlie Bar (1976) manages to get its kicks in while relating the sad story of sisters who choose a life of prostitution. Helen Ko and Chen Ping star as the beautiful daughters of a struggling barkeep. When his benevolent wife dies, the owner’s mood sours, and he makes his girls work for him in his seedy tavern. The women are coerced into dalliances with some real losers, but it’s a real pleasure to watch them roll up their sleeves and get to work. Both Ko and Ping are electric in a series of charged encounters.
