Review

The novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman by John Fowles got the silver screen treatment in 1981, starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. The novelist based the work on some of his favorite romance stories that came from the 19th century, including inspiration from the likes of Emily Bronte and Thomas Hardy. It’s about a guy who sees a beautiful woman and winds up throwing his whole life away for her. He renounces any sense of social status he had to be with the woman, and threw away a marriage proposal he gave to another woman just to be with her, and one day the woman just up and vanishes. So now he’s on the search for her. Streep plays the woman in question, and it’s unfortunate, but she doesn’t get naked. But she does come pretty close when in the bed with Irons, and almost pulls the covers down too low from her chest. Won’t catch stripping Streep here.
