The terrifying true story, turned spine-chilling book became one of the most famous horror movies of all time when Cool Hand Luke (1967) director Stuart Rosenberg crafted The Amityville Horror (1979). Real life serial killer Ronald DeFeo Jr. slaughters his entire family at his home in Amityville, New York, creating a bit of a real estate nightmare for anyone trying to sell the house. A pair of suckers with some stepkids, George Lutz (James Brolin) and his wife Kathy (Margot Kidder), buy the house, but figure it'll all be okay as long as Father Delaney (Rod Steiger) sprinkles a little Holy water and says a few Hail Mary's before the move in. Things don't work out that way, and soon enough George is becoming angrier and angrier, little Amy (Natasha Ryan) has an imaginary ghost friend who says creepy things to her and glowing red eyes peering at her from outside the bedroom window, there are flies everywhere attacking any priest who walks in the door for some reason, the walls are bleeding, and there's a creepy hidden room that has all sorts of devil worshipping marks on it. The home inspector sure dropped the ball on this one! How much of that actually happened? Probably not a whole lot, but don't let the not so true nature of the supposedly true story keep you from enjoying a good haunted house flick. It's not as iconic as the spooky stuff, but our favorite scene was when Lois Lane showed her daily planets! Yes, Margot Kidder's Amity-titties come out of hiding for a quick flash as she does some ballet in her underwear before getting creeped out by some creepy things going bump in the night. If we were a ghost, we'd creep on her every time she changed clothes or hopped in the shower. Great scares, and Margot's great pair. What's not to love about The Amityville Horror?
