In the impeccably realized historical drama Tage des Sturms (2003), divisions between East and West Germany are surmounted by a man and woman more loyal to each other than to their respective nations. Wotan Wilke Möhring and Franziska Petri reside on different sides of the Berlin Wall, but their cultural differences are easily bridged by a mutual attraction. Director Thomas Freundner communicates their respective stories with patience and lyricism, catching both characters in their most revealing moments. In Petri’s case, that moment occurs as she pulls her dripping body out of a cold German lake.
