Carole Laure in Sweet MovieYugoslavian filmmaker Dusan Makavejev achieved critical acclaim with his first few complex, artful films in the 1960s, and then found his work banned in his homeland upon making the explicit international hit WR: Mysteries of the Organism.

Fleeing his Communist-controlled county, Makavejev followed up WR with his pivotal skinematic triumph -- the literally heady psychedelic sex-and-mess-fest Sweet Movie, which sugar-shocked theaters for the first time on this date in 1974.

Cleaved into two stories, Sweet Movie first follows the carnal awakening of Carol Laure as a virginal beauty queen. Then it shifts to Anna Prucnal as a seafarer who captains a ship filled with sugar.

Anna Prucnal in Sweet MovieEach chapter comes rife with wildly uncompromised images, ranging from luscious female nudes engaging in kinky hardcore sex (and water-sports) to sickening dessert consumption to piles of (real) dead bodies massacred by totalitarian regimes.

Sweet Movie isn’t always an easy-to-swallow experience, but its leading ladies are both frequently naked knockouts and it forever expanded the possibilities of what might go on and come off at the movies forever after.
