Nothing says surrealist dramedy like Sweet Movie (1974) written and directed by Yugoslavian filmmaker Dušan Makavejev. As a product from France, Canada and West Germany, this skinternational flick features dialogue in English, Polish, French, Italian, Spanish, and the universal language of lust! Controversial and pornographic, the psychedelic fantasy is divided into two acts. The first follows the sexploits of a virginal woman (Carole Laure) who starts her wedding night getting washed by Mr. Kapital (John Vernon). He’s Dean Wormer from Animal House (1978) and she’s an Anne Hathway look-alike. Perhaps that’s why she’s topless! After her nightmarish deflowering, the sexy brunette takes a bizarre journey that ends in a commune where members practice rebirthing and infantilism (complete with diaper changing). Oh mama! The second half of the film centers around Anna Planeta (Anna Prucnal), a femme fatale who captains a sugar-filled boat with a Karl Marx head on the prow. Anna seduces and murders the seaman Potemkin (Pierre Clémenti). If that’s not sinister enough, she lures a group of children onto the boat and seemingly kills them before they escape from their body bags to cavort on the shore. Sweet Movie was widely banned upon release for its scenes of un-simulated sex, coprophilia, and documentary footage of dead bodies. Despite all of that, you’ll get a sugar rush in your pants when you see Ms. Prucnal’s frosted funbags and powdered poontang as she climbs on Potemkin’s top mast in a huge vat of tooth-rotting sucrose. No wonder sugar is associated with cavities!
