Based on the novel by Peter Hoeg, Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997) stars glorious Julia Ormond as Smilla Jaspersen, a half-Inuit Greenlander who's put down roots in Copenhagen but is having a hard time coping with what everyone around her calls reality. That's because an Inuit boy from her building has died in a tumble off the roof, and she doesn't believe for a second that it was an accident. Her little friend had a big fear of heights, you see, so he wouldn't have been up there enjoying the view; something, thinks Julia, is seriously askew. The chilly hottie then begins a probe of the kiddo's demise, helped by a mystery man known as the Mechanic (Gabriel Byrne). When she discovers that the boy's family is mixed up with a mining company that's doing all sorts of hush-hush research back in her homeland of Greenland, Julia begins to see a conspiracy afoot . . . and things don't get any better when she sees Gabriel hanging with the company's president.
