Review

The valuable life lesson to be learned from Senso (1993) is that there is no limit to the fury of a woman whose affections have been trifled with. Even if you are not the guy who trifled her, she’s liable to burn you. Set in Prague in the late 1800s, this multinational European production directed by Gérard Vergez tells the tale of a dutiful wife whose husband, a Czech count, becomes the victim of a sudden and paralyzing malady. Whether to cheer him up or hasten him to his demise cannot be said for certain, but the wife regales her captive audience with the confessional account of how she had cheated on him six years earlier with an officer of the occupying Austrian armies. To soften the blow to the crippled count, wily wifey asserts that after her lover had done her dirty, she turned him in, and he was executed.
