Sex on the Beach isn’t just a modern cocktail … the erotic allure of the seashore extends at least as far back as the late 1920s and early ’30s, when ‘Art Studies photography guides featured nakedstarlets in the sand on their covers and inside, often shot by legendary lensman Edwin Bower Hesser.
Indeed, it was a favorite backdrop for such ‘underground’ sessions, owing to the secluded nature of the venue. Hesser’s languid Ocean Sprites, published in December 1929, is one of the more sensual sand•ples of the genre.
