Sa Paraiso ni Efren (1999)

The Filipino film industry knows how to mix highbrow and lowbrow elements into an irresistible concoction. Take, for example, Sa Paraiso ni Efren (1999), a Pinoy sex drama that prominently features scandalous screen star Ana Capri and still managed to clean up at the annual Gawad Urian Awards--the national equivalent of the Oscars. The film chronicles a male social worker’s pursuit of Efren, the exotic male dancer with whom the civil servant is smitten, although the best scenes unmistakably belong to Capri. In her role as Efren’s nymphomaniac girlfriend, Capri lights up the screen by passionately experimenting with a range of amorous positions.
