Review

The timeless bedtime story about an impish elf who claims possession of a miller’s daughter for spinning straw into gold is treated to a modern rethinking in Mark Jones’s B-horror vehicle Rumpelstiltskin (1996). Picking up where the Brothers Grimm left off, Jones weaves a creepy tale about a widowed police officer’s wife who purchases a stone figurine that happens to house the spirit of the long-slumbering Rumpelstiltskin. When the elf reveals himself to Shelley (Kim Johnston Ulrich), she implores him to use his magical powers to restore her husband back to life. When her wish is granted, however, the former widow isn’t prepared to make the sacrifice that the impish monster demands. Director Mark Jones understands that the last thing viewers want is to incessantly have to gaze into Rumpelstiltskin’s creepy visage, so he spices up the proceedings by coaxing Ulrich into flashing her infinitely more appealing can.
