Review

A huge hit at Cannes that was done in by the atrocious decision to cut it to pieces and try to turn it into a basic horror movie when it was released in the USA, Possession (1981), is a simultaneously surreal and hyper-real, sexually charged fable of everyday life being intersected by realms of existence that lie beyond the scope of successful human exploration. Annoyed by that esoteric sentence? Then you're going to want to avoid this confusing cult favorite. A young Sam Neill is Mark, a West Berlin based spy whose wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) demands a divorce and to keep the kid (Michael Hogben). Shocked, Mark agrees but is left unsatisfied since she won't give him a good reason why. After the papers are passed, she ignores her son, leaving him in squalor while she hooks up with a dude named Heinrich (Heinz Bennent). Only, when Mark visits him Anna's gone, and his son's teacher looks exactly like her. A private eye tracks Anna down to a rundown apartment, and then things get really weird. Like supernatural creatures covered in tentacles, disappearing dead bodies and devious doppelgangers, levels of weird. Don't expect any easy answers, but even if you're not into the weird, Lynchian side of cinema, you'll develop a Possession obsession thanks to the looks at Miss Adjani's cans. The "Best Actress" Award winner at Cannes thanks to this one, Isabelle was hot as Hell when the stunning brunette strips down for Sam Neill, lets him cop a feel, then lies back in bed totally topless. It's criminal for a woman who possesses tits like that to not show them off in an R-rated movie, so good job Isabelle! Embrace the weird plot, then kick back with some tissues for a long self love session thanks to Isabelle's work in Possession
